FAKE BLOOD RECIPE
I know, I know. Do you really need a recipe for edible fake blood? Unless you want to drizzle ketchup on your cupcakes, then yes! I host Halloween Bunko at my house every year and every year I’m stressed out about what to make.
I hate Halloween food that looks good and tastes…meh. If we’re going to sacrifice taste for looks, count me out. Last year when I hosted I realized, hey – if you drizzle edible blood on whatever amazing thing you already make, it looks Halloween-y!
Which is why I made these mini red velvet cheesecakes and just drizzled some edible blood on top. I made it on the thick side so that it would last the whole night of Bunko without ending up in a puddle on the plate.
Basically all it is is corn syrup, red food coloring, a tiny drop of blue food coloring to give it some authentic color, and cornstarch to thicken it up and make it not see through.
Then start drizzling on donuts…
cheesecakes…and whatever delicious treat you already love!

Hey there!
This looks like an excellent idea!
I’m making a Halloween themed cake and am wanting to put this over a frosted white cake. If I’m making this a day in advance should I wait to add the fake blood until day of or before serving?
I would probably wait until day of
What kind of food coloring do you use?
Betty Crocker!
You didn’t say how much of anything.?????????
I use parts depending on how much you need. So 4 parts could mean 4 drops etc. Just keep the ratios consistent.
Does the “blood” stay wet to the touch the whole time or does it dry/harden/settle? If it does dry/harden/settle about how long after applying it to the cake will that be?
It stays wet to the touch
You don’t need to heat it to activate the cornstarch?
nope
This turned out well! I didn’t use the blue food coloring as just one drop of it turned my “blood” completely dark purple.
Yes it might matter what kind of food coloring you use.
Where do you find the tiny Knives to stick into the cake/cupcakes?
I found them at the craft store AC Moore.
I made sugar glass shards and stuck in cupcakes then drizzled the “blood” over them.
They are Wilton and Walmart always has them.
Wont adding the cornstarch make it clumpy? Typically when adding corn starch to liquid for thickening you need to make a slurry
Nope. No need in this recipe.
No heating???
Nope!
How much corn syrup? How much corn starch?
Corn syrup is just as much as you need. 1/2 cup, cup? Same with cornstarch. It just depends how thick you want your blood. Add more cornstarch to thicken.
If I make this ahead of time should I keep it in the fridge?
Not necessary to keep it in the fridge.
Can tbis go on top of a candy apple?
Yes!
How much corn syrup and corn starch?
Great recipe! I was looking for something different to make for Halloween and these turned out great on cupcakes. This was very easy to make and it’s a creative idea for any Halloween themed food.
How much of each? Tsp? Tbsp? Cups? Cornstarch?
It’s all approximate. 1/2 cup corn syrup. 1 tablespoon cornstarch.
Does it taste bad?
Nope. It just tastes sweet.
Clear corn syrup?
Yes!
How long does it keep? How far in advance can it be made? Amy separation if done in advance?
I would say at least a week if not longer.
I’m pretty sure they make black food coloring. Things just got darker…
So creative! Perfect for Halloween!
This is creative! Awesome Halloween treat idea!
You are so creative!
I agree that you don’t want to sacrifice looks for taste. What’s the point of making something if it’s not going to be worth the time to actually make it in the end? You could also do something similar with green food coloring if you wanted to make slime or something else related to halloween.

Red food coloring and blood food coloring?! Hahaha! Must have been a Freudian slip! Looks deliciously creepy 🙂
Thanks for the catch. Freudian slip for sure. That’s what happens when I type at 1AM.
