SESAME CHICKEN DIP
Recently we had some friends invite us out for Thai food. Y’all, John and I have had horrific Thai experiences in the past. I won’t go into detail but we are scarred for life.
It’s so hard for me to pass up a night with friends. I’m an extroverted introvert. Or vice versa. I love being alone but I get energy from interacting with people.
So when someone invites me out and I know there’s gonna be good conversation (yes, you Claire)…I can’t pass it up. But I did. And it killed me.
I said, “Catch you next time,” because I didn’t want them to change their plans for us.
I was really stretching myself when I made this Thai Coconut Chicken but the difference is that I made it in MY kitchen where I could control what I was eating.
So why this Sesame Chicken Dip? I loved it. Cream cheese topped with sweet and sour sauce, green onions, spinach, Asian flavored chicken…it just works.
It tastes fresh and really can’t be considered cooking because it’s more layering. The sesame oil is a must for that distinctive Asian taste.

Sesame Chicken Dip
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
- 4 teaspoons sesame oil, (no substitutions)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 4 cups shredded cooked chicken breast
- 3 (8 ounce) packages reduced-fat cream cheese, (see note)
- 1 (10 ounce) jar sweet-and-sour sauce
- 2 cups chopped fresh baby spinach
- 1 cup thinly sliced green onions, about 8
- 1/2 cup chopped salted peanuts
- Sesame rice crackers, (must use these)
Instructions
- Mix soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic; toss with chicken. Refrigerate, covered, at least 1 hour.
- Spread the cream cheese onto a large serving plate. You want a fairly thin layer so that the toppings to cream cheese has a good ratio. Top the cream cheese with sweet-and-sour-sauce, spinach and chicken. Sprinkle with green onions and peanuts. Refrigerate, covered, at least 2 hours. Serve with rice crackers.
I plan on making this next week, but with cream cheese spread. I think it might be better for dipping.
I made this for a party and everyone loved it! I used 2 of the giant (12.5 oz) cans of chicken breast from Costco (can I say that?) and it was perfect. My platter, while very pretty, isn’t flat. It has a wide rim and the platter part is pretty narrow so I had to adjust ingredients to fit (ie.didn’t use all of the cream cheese, used all of the sweet and sour, part of the spinach, etc) but your recipe is so flexible and delicious it somehow all worked. The best part is that we had tons of leftovers so a few days later I took the leftover Sesame Chicken Dip and mixed it with leftover Spinach dip. I put some leftover plain bow tie pasta in the bottom of a casserole dish, put a chopped chicken breast over that, then spread the two mixed dips over that. I baked until it was heated through. My husband sat down, looked at it and said “Do I want to know?”. He finally agreed that it was good. I called It “Cocktail Dip Casserole” Love your blog!!! Going to be making your Chili’s Queso Dip for a party in a couple of weeks. I’m hoping there will be leftovers!
Wow. You are really creative! I’m impressed!
Hi Christy! Greetings from Tempe, AZ (It’s hot!) I want to make this for a party we’re (hopefully) having this month and wondered if you’ve ever used canned chicken breasts for this recipe. I have some cans of that warehouse chicken breast that I need to use up and would love to be able to not have to cook.
Canned would totally work.
How far ahead can you put this together?
Need to make the night before .wondering if it will be ok?
Yes you can definitely make this the night before.
I wonder if whipped cream cheese would work?! Super soft and still has that fat lol
Yes!! Totally would work.
πππ Iβm sitting here scouring my top blogs for a super sugary satisfying dessert and reading this and laughing πππ you were missed that night! And the food was delish Iβm so sad youβre missing out on Thai but I get it. This looks amazing! Now I might swap out everything for chocolate and PB and butter π€·πΌββοΈπ€·πΌββοΈπ€·πΌββοΈ
Hahahahahaha
Okay, SAME. I’ve come around, but my first experience with Thai was BAD. Also, you know why this dip is working for you? Because you added cheese. Any cuisine that doesn’t involve cheese you just automatically have to question, is this worth it? LOL! π
So truuueee Karen.
This looks amazing! I can’t wait to try it!
