HOMEMADE TACO SEASONING RECIPE
What I’ve learned since I’ve had this blog is that are a couple of things that are considered taboo with the serious foodies: condensed cream of anything soups, food colorings, and taco seasoning packets. These things also tend to bring on a slew of strongly worded emails and comments. I never knew that food could bring out such anger.
I totally get the condensed soup thing. They’re not healthy and full of sodium – but sometimes throwing some chicken in a crockpot with a can of something is what I have to do to have dinner done when I’ll be gone all day. The couple of recipes I have on this blog with condensed soups in them are actually some of the most popular.
The food coloring I think should be taken in stride. I don’t think Rainbow Cupcakes once a year will kill you. I just don’t.
And everytime I post a recipe with taco seasoning in it for taco meat I get a lot of comments like “ew“, “yuck“, and “so much unnecessary sodium“.
Phew. This food blogging thing isn’t for the thin skinned.
So what I’m saying is that I hear ya; I get it. Every one is entitled to an opinion and I appreciate all of your comments (but the nice ones I appreciate more).
Does that mean that I won’t ever post a recipe with the above contraband in it ever again? Ummm, no. The reason I have this blog is because I love food.
And food comes in all shapes, tastes, and sizes. And hello, my name is The Girl Who Ate Everything so it’s my duty to not exclude anything.
But I thought I’d give homemade taco seasoning a try. Sometimes I don’t have a seasoning packet and who knew I could make my own taco seasoning with what I have on hand.
HOMEMADE TACO SEASONING MIX
Remember I’m all about more convenient so making my own is WAY more convenient than running to the grocery store with four kids to buy store-bought packets for taco night.
WHAT IS IN TACO SEASONING?
- chili powder
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- red pepper flakes
- oregano
- paprika
- cumin
- sea salt
- pepper
This homemade version has a rich flavor that you can’t get with a store-bought taco seasoning packet. You can make it in bulk in a big batch and use it whenever you want or for every Taco Tuesday. Just store it in a dry place in your spice cabinet.
A good rule of thumb is that you use 2 tablespoons of seasoning for any type of meat.
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE TACO SEASONING
- Mix all the seasonings together and store in an airtight container.
- Use 2 Tablespoons of taco seasoning for every pound of ground beef. Add the spices to browned meat with 1/2 cup of water.
HOW TO ADD THICKNESS
Store bought taco seasoning usually has a thickening agent in it. If you want the same sauciness that a store bought mixture have two options:
- Add 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch to the spice mixture and follow directions.
- Add 2 tablespoons of flour with the water when simmering.
IS THIS TACO SEASONING SPICY?
Yes. I would compare it to a spicy version of a store bought kind. To make a mild version reduce the chili powder to 2 teaspoons and eliminate the red pepper flakes. To make it more spicy add some cayenne pepper.
TACO RECIPES:
You can use this taco seasoning in all of these recipes:
- Mini Taco Stuffed Peppers
- Easy Beef Burrito Skillet
- Chicken Taco Soup
- Taco Tater Casserole
- Taco Pizza Rolls
- Nacho Pot Pie
- Taco Grilled Cheese
Homemade Taco Seasoning
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon sea salt, (or kosher salt)
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper. Store in an airtight container. Yields about 2 3/4 tablespoons.
- To use: Use about 2 tablespoons of the taco seasoning for every 1 pound of meat. Use more or less depending on your preference. Brown meat and drain the fat. Add your taco seasoning along with about 1/2 cup of water. Simmer and stir until water is absorbed.
Notes
- Add 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch to the spice mixture and follow directions.
- Add 2 tablespoons of flour with the water when simmering.
You can also reduce the heat by using paprika. I can’t handle the spicy hot stuff anymore
Great recipe, I’ve copied it down and can’t wait to try it. Just need to buy one last spice, other than that, I’ve got everything I need in the kitchen.
I’ve always used the packet season mix and kept promising myself that I’d make it myself, well I can now. Thanks for sharing 🙂
You are welcome!
To your opening, I stand by you and your way of thinking. This was my first read of any of your recipes and I’m very happy with this one!! You go girl!! ☆☆☆☆☆
Loved this recipe!!! I will never buy packets again. Btw, i used the entire 2.75 T because i like my ground beef spicy. Thank you!
Awesome!
Thank you!! Much appreciated and I love it!
Geez. People who have a beef (pun intended) with the sodium content of storebought taco seasoning could just make their own, even for use with recipes that call for packets.
I’ve never bought taco seasoning, that I recall. I always write up recipes with “packets” as the measurement, because that’s what people know to use as a frame of reference! My taco seasoning recipe might call for using 2 tablespoons and someone else’s might call for using 1-1/2 tablespoons, but both recipes probably indicate how much equals “a packet.”
Some readers just need to get a life and quit raining on everyone else’s parades.
Thanks Rachel!
We loved this. I only used half the chili powder and skipped the red pepper flakes because I don’t tolerate spicy foods well. I used one batch in its entirety for one pound of ground pork and it was perfect. I’ll make this again for sure. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
This taco seasoning hit the spot, as we don’t have access to good tex-mex or mexican food where we live. I didn’t add the red pepper flakes as our kids are not spicy eaters and I added a bit more salt when cooking the meat.
Other than curbing it to our pallets this is a great easy to follow seasoning, thanks a million!!!!!
If you want more thickness you can also use a small can of tomato sauce instead. Great recipe, though I changed it a bit because I didn’t have all the ingredients
Thanks Angel!
I have tried so many homemade taco seasoning recipes and they all fell short of my expectations. This one is the bomb! The just perfect proportions of each seasoning but still give you that familiar taco flavor that you’re used to from the packet only so much better!
Yay! happy to hear that.
Perfect blend! I use this weekly
So happy to hear that.
Christy!
It is your duty, get it gurl!
Haters gonna hate.
I love your blog and recipes!!❤️
Thank you!
Is there something I can use to replace the paprika? I don’t have any. This looks yummy.
You can leave it out or sub 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
Forget about store brought package, this was terrific!! I tweeked a kittle bc my family doesn’t like spicy. But overall azaing thank you
Thank you!
wow… this turned out AMAZING!!! I was initially skeptical with how much chili powder was used, as I typically go easy on that stuff… but having tried other recipes that just didnt quite hit the mark, i decided to give this a go, and it is perfect!!! Very easy to make, and exactly the flavor balance I was craving without paying McCormick $4 for a blend of spices I can make myself at probably $1 value (or less). thanks a million times over for posting this recipe!!!
You are welcome!!
EASY recipe 👌
Awesome recipe and great food. I really like it. Thank you so much for sharing the useful post. I would like to be share with others.
Share away!
Nice Mexican restaurant and awesome food. Great recipe. I really like this post. Thank you so much for sharing this useful post.
You’re welcome!
This recipe is awesome – I haven’t bought taco seasoning for years, because this is so much tastier (not to mention easier, cheaper, and always handy)! Thanks very much!
You’re welcome!
I made the taco seasoning recipe. It was delicious. At first I thought it would be too spicy, but it was perfect when the meat was paired with the other taco fixings.
Great hearing that.
I like the Taco Seasoning, to be honest, it’s not a big thing in Britain as Mexican food isn’t (Taco Bell has only just arrived in larger English cities), onion & garlic powders are not normally used in cooking – the fresh stuff is. I have researched & found both onion & garlic powders on Whole Foods in the UK in 1 Kg quantities – over 2lb weight – perhaps it’s caterers? Anyway, I’ll try smaller for the ‘Taco’ Seasoning. Lots of us in the UK don’t use salt, but in this case I recommend it as a preservative (I experimented with homemade PlayDough when my children were small – dough WITH salt lasted a few days in the fridge, dough without visibly deteriorated in 2 days!).
This is my first visit, your site came up when I googled buy Taco Seasoning UK, I wanted to know if supermarkets sold it. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger said (I hope I spelt it right!), I’ll be back!! (and don’t worry about those ‘sodium’ haters, I don’t use salt when recipes suggest it (unless needed to preserve), I just omit it! Thanks for a great suggestion!
Menna, Welcome, welcome! You are hilarious! If it’s easier to buy it, I’m all for it!
Thanks for the recipe. I am using it (more or less) to slow cook a pork shoulder right now. I doubled or tripled the proportions of everything but the salt, which I halved. I also tossed in a couple of pinches of ground sage and a teaspoon or two or liquid smoke (hikory flavour), because I like that with pork.
Regarding thickener, you might try masa harina (corn flour). It’s gluten free (although I personally do not care about that), and it has a good flavour. I won’t use it with the pork shoulder, but I do use it when I make chili.
This recipe is really aromatic and flavorful. I substitute beef for a sweet potato/black bean mixture…delish! Thanks of this ‘go-to’ Pin!
You’re welcome!
I just googled for a recipe for this, just want you to know, you were the first blogger after the couple cooking sites. I googled, homemade taco seasoning and you are #8 on first page. I am trying this now!
Cool! That’s awesome!
I love this recipe. I make it in bulk and use 2tbs at a time to make tacos. I store in a large mason jar type glass jar with a rubber seal. Keeps nice and fresh for months.
I leave out the salt though. My husband complains but I don’t miss it and we’re better off without it. Very flavorful with 2TBS per 1lb of meat whether I use ground beef of turkey or chicken for fajitas 🙂
Thanks so much for sharing!
Is Chili powder used in this recipe hot? In Australia chili powder is 100% ground chili and very hot!
Nope. I would definitely say it has a little heat but is not very hot at all.
This is great. I have been trying different taco seasoning ‘recipes’ looking for the perfect combo to replace the store-bought packets. So far, they haven’t been quite right so I end up adding stuff until it tastes right but I never write down what I add….but THIS is just right. I added a pinch of smoked chipotle powder but other than that, this is perfect. I mixed up a 1/2 cup batch so I have it ready to go anytime. THANKS!!
This was sooo good. Very flavorful and perfect balance of spices.
