Bloomin’ Onion Bread
This Bloomin’ Onion Bread is one of my favorite party appetizers. How can you go wrong with bread, cheese, and butter sauce.

BLOOMIN’ ONION BREAD
My husband and I waited tables at Outback Steakhouse while we were in college and ate our share of Bloomin’ Onions. But the funny thing is we never actually ordered them.
If a table ordered a Bloomin’ Onion and canceled the order, the onion would sit in the window until another table ordered one which was usually just a matter of minutes.
But every once in a while there would be a lull where no orders would come in and the “Bloom” was pronounced “dead”, meaning it would not be served to customers, and all the servers got to eat it.
For some reason we always came to work starving so when this happened we ate our little hearts out.
I don’t know if there are other servers out there but I still have reoccurring nightmares where I’m in the weeds with all of my table – everyone needs a drink refill and all of my orders are wrong. I’m sooo happy when I wake up from that dream!
This naughty Bloomin’ Onion Bread has cheese stuffed in every crack and is cut just like the Bloomin’ Onion from Outback.
My family loved this but really it’s enough to feed a small army. It’s a fun way to serve bread because everyone can just pull off a piece of cheesy onion bread. This would be a great appetizer or bread for a meal.

Bloomin’ Onion Bread
Ingredients
- 1 unsliced loaf sourdough bread
- 12-16 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup finely diced green onion
- 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Cut the bread lengthwise and widthwise without cutting through the bottom crust. This can be a little tricky going the second way but the bread is very forgiving.
- Place on a foil-lined baking sheet. Insert cheese slices between cuts. Combine butter, onion, and poppy seeds. Drizzle over bread. Wrap in foil; place on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
- Unwrap the bread and bake 10 more minutes, or until cheese is melted.
I wonder if an electric knife would work better to slice the bread? I know it works wonders on angelfood cake….
Holy cow, I’m drooling over this photo! I can’t wait to try this! Found it over at Pinterest and I’m Pinning myself!

Scissors & Spatuals
I made this for a game night and my friends LOVED it! Of course, I did not tell them how simple it is to make it 🙂
This is so delicious! My boyfriend and I make it all the time 🙂 thanks!
@Linda,
Ooh that sounds like a yummy version. I will have to try it…
I make this same idea using garlic butter melted, to wash down the bread, then stuff it with grated parm, chopped prosciutto, and chopped fresh basil. Bake in foil for a few.
Soooo messy but SOOO yummy
I’ve made this a few times, and it’s always a hit… for anyone having difficulty with the second round of cutting the bread, I found the using (clean) scissors makes much cleaner cuts and you don’t end up squishing the bread.
Otherwise an awesome recipe, I’m almost sorry I started making it, because now whenever I get invited to a party I’m demanded upon to bring it!
@us,
I’ve used just a regular loaf too and it works but the sourdough is soo much better and held up better too when cutting. Good luck!
Do you think this will work ok with an Italian Round loaf of bread instead of sourdough? The local grocer was out of sourdough (im sure cause everyone was on a mad dash to make this!) .. so the only one left to grab that looked similar to sourdough, was an italian round loaf… will that work ok? Thanks!
I made this earlier this week to take to a church potluck dinner. It was raved over, and gobbled up (or rather down!). The only thing I changed was eliminating the poppy seeds (thought I had some on hand, but realized too late that I didn’t), and added more green onion. It really was good!
I just made this tonight. It was wonderful!
OMG, this sounds so.l.l good!
I must make this and eat it!
This is truely amazing! Posted a link back to you on my blog.
I have nightmares about being a server all the time. I havent been a server for like 5 years!!! Will they ever go away.
Your story about always being hungry and eating the food in the window made me smile! I know exactly what you are talking about!
This looks delicious!
. . . and you are not alone. I haven’t waited tables in eleven years, but every once in a while I have an awful dream about being in the weeds. I used to have them more often, but over the years they have diminished.
Oh, I feel like I’ll never escape my “in the weeds” server dreams. Often, I step outside for a break or a smoke, and then forget I’m working, only to remember hours later that I have an endless dining room filled with hungry, angry people. Then I go back and try to catch up. Sheesh! Great bread, bad dream.
THANKS for sharing this recipe. I made it just as you stated. It was wonderful. I posted to my blog, and credited you. http://inthekitchenwithpolly.com/bloomin-onion-bread/

Holy mother this is good.
the only thing I would recommend is spraying the tin foil with Pam – mine stuck. And maybe more onions. Those are what made it especially delicious!
Tfs!
I make this all the time, we call it Party Bread
I am SO sick from over-eating!! I made this for dinner and it was so yummy we ate every last bite with our soup.
Very, very good recipe but my stomach needs a big rest before I ever eat it again 🙂
O.M.G.
That is all
Oh my god. My boyfriend about died when I showed him this. I’m afraid to make it myself, for fear of actually doing him in with it, yikes, lol. Can’t wait to try this.
that looks delicious!
yea, my little sister works in a kitchen and says that shes had nights where all she hears is the ticket machine printing up new orders 😛
Oh my goodness….this recipe is a MUST try for our next get-together!
Looks so good! and easy! And as a former server, I too have had those nightmares!
thank you for this! I am eating my computer.

This looks insanely amazing. Can’t wait to try it out!
I have anxiety server dreams all the time and I haven’t worked in a restaurant for years. They’re the worst!
I made this for a family get together and we all lost our MINDS over it. Delicious, easy to make, and the presentation is great. Thank you!
I haven’t been a server in more than 20 years, and I still have that dream. 🙂
the only problem with using poppy seeds that you can get false positive on a drug test.
I made this today. Used thin sliced swiss cheese and garlic instead on onions. Delicious!
Made this bread for a crowd last night and it was devoured! Cut up a lb. of cheese but only ended up using 1/2- 3/4. Do yourself a favor and make this recipe!
Hye friend..errm.. you have a nice blog.. but you can earning money on your blog visit my blog.. http://how-to-makemoney-from-blog.blogspot.com
Ha! Great minds think alike! I didn’t copy you, I swear (although I think you’re awesome and totally worth copying if I were that type of person! 🙂 )
I just took this to a Relief Society function and got rave reviews about it. It was so yummy.
The great thing about your blog is that I can always trust the recipes to take anywhere – even when I haven’t tried them out yet myself. Your recipes have never failed me! Thanks for always making me look good! 🙂
My boyfriend would love this, I am going to have to make it for him one night. It looks delicious!
I still get those nightmares too. And I was only a server for 3 months!
Mmmm yes, I’m all about the cheese. And the bread.
Yum! Fantastic idea!
We had this along with pork chops and green beans the other night! So yummy!
Wow that is such a fun take on the bloom. I have always wanted to try the blooming onion but, scared about how much I may like it. I may have to just try this bread instead. It looks too good to pass up.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one with those crazy dreams!
SO so funny. My husband and I served when we first got married at Chili’s and I have the same nightmare all the time.
LOVE your blog!
This looks insanely good! Need to find a reason to make this.
Nurses have similar bad dreams. We can’t get to our patients to take care of them. Can’t give them their medications, aren’t able to get to their rooms to meet them and do an assessment, etc. Then the next shift comes on and we are desparately trying to explain to the oncoming nurse why it is that we don’t know anything about the patients assigned to our care and haven’t done anything for them. It’s a terrible dream.
Whenever I have one of those dreams I wake up terrified. Comfort food helps. If this bread was around after one of those dreams I would probably eat the whole thing all by myself.
My reocurring server dream is that my “station” is the Giants ballpark and I just can’t get to everyone.
This looks AMAZING!!! Can’t wait to give it a try!
awww.. this post brings back memories. i used to work at Outback during college too and i still have a place in my heart for it. i loved closing and getting to take home any mushrooms left or potato soup. MMM… high five for Outback servers!!
I’m mainly a lurker on your blog, but I had to pipe in about the waitressing dreams (or would they be nightmares??)
I worked at an Applebees 8 years ago and I still have those dreams once in awhile!
This bread looks delicious…the Bloomin’ Onion is such a weakness of mine.
This looks and sounds like the perfect party food. Now all I need is a party…..maybe Father’s day….
I am a carbo junkie, and that bread looks to die for! Cheese, cheese and more cheese on top of fresh sourdough YUM!!
@Sandy,
I definitely think sandwich slices would work. You just want them thin so you can stick them in between the bread.
I used to work at Outback too! I could never order one myself, but if there was ever one out for the servers, you can’t help but have a few bites at least! This recipe looks awesome, such a good idea!
Would buying sandwich slices of that cheese work just as well? Or should I slice it myself?
Love the presentation!
Pretty sure I just died looking at that picture… haha Looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it!! 🙂
This bread looks so good! I am so glad to know that I am not the only one that has those HORRIBLE nightmares! They really are nightmares and they feel so real! What is up with that???!!! Maybe it’s just an outback Thingy? All I know is that I probably have one of those nightmares every couple of months and it has me worried for days! THE WORST!
So cheesy, so good! Looks heavenly!
Oh that looks soooo yummy!! 🙂
Drool! All that ooey gooey cheese is making me want to lick the screen! I totally feel ya about stressful dreams – I’m a week off getting married and am constantly having arriving too late nightmares! 🙂
YES! I have those dreams too! They always hit me when I am super stressed and waking up from them is such a relief. I love your blog!
Oh my that looks like a yummy heart attack! My teens would love it!
Work nightmares still haunt me, why do I have so many tables in my sleep? And the next day it would be like I had never gone home at all…. Am so trying this, the hubs will love it!
can’t wait to try this one out, I think it will be a huge hit with the hubby!
ooh! I need to make this.
beautiful!!! I feel like eating it right now 🙂

This looks fantastic. I, too, still wait on tables all night in my dreams and I haven’t work in a restaurant in 15 years. Strange!
