NEIMAN MARCUS COOKIE RECIPE
(posted in 2009)
Last week a bunch of us ladies were invited to an event at Neiman Marcus by one of our friends that works there. There were free massages, drinks, food, facials, and a $50 gift card for going.
It was my first time at Neiman Marcus. We even dragged our poor husbands along so we could get an extra $50 gift card but let’s be honest, you can’t really buy much for $50 at that store.
Anyway, being there reminded me of an email that I have gotten repeatedly over the years about the Neiman Marcus cookie story. I am not sure if this is true or just a myth but it’s entertaining nonetheless…
…supposedly a lady ordered a cookie at Neiman Marcus and enjoyed it so much she asked to buy the recipe. The waitress said she could if she paid “two fifty”. She assumed it meant $2.50 but she was charged $250. She called the account office at Neiman Marcus after receiving the bill and they refused to refund her. So, she told them that she was going to have $250 dollars worth of fun with the recipe. She gave the recipe out to everyone she could think of and told them to give it out to others.
So I have to say with all the hype about the cookie, I was afraid I would be let down but I absolutely wasn’t. They have a crisp outside with a soft middle. The blended oats add a fabulous chewy texture. I definitely will be adding them to my cookie repertoire. Enjoy!

I first saw this story nearly 40 years ago. Google it – it’s a fake story but the cookies are awesome!
Ha that may be true!
A ( notice I did not say ‘THE’) ‘Neiman Marcus’ cookie recipe was published in our local paper many years ago. I just compared her recipe to that one, and hers is basically 1/2 of the recipe published. The only differences, however slight, are, hers is doing the 12-oz by measure and I believe the publlshed one was referring to 2-12-oz bags chips. Also, the published full recipe called for 1 8oz Hershey Bar, grated, which makes the dough look dingy (din-gee, not ding-ee!!), hers calls for chopping, which makes them appear as small chunks. However, grating a candy bar was a little messy as it tended to melt a little – so – next time I just melted it and added to the dough – therefore chocolate cookies. I have not made these in several years, so thank you Christy for reminding me of this cookie. The chopping of the chocolate bar is a good idea so I may do that next time, and also using her 1/2 measurements so I will not have to calculate that myself. I have done the full recipe each time, spreading the goodness around to the family, we are mostly chocolate lovers! By the way, I rolled them into about 1″ dia. balls and the recipe said 2″ apart. Someone previously asked about how far apart and I did not read all comments to see if someone answered.
Thanks for the info Cecelia!
Old fashioned.
I see someone else commented asking this … Old Fashioned or Quick Oats? (I have no idea what “regular” means).
Old fashioned. Sorry.
Who cares if the story is a hoax! Just make the cookies and enjoy them! You can call them Neiman Marcus cookies or Sears and Robuck! It’s just a wonderful cookie to enjoy and Maybe share.
I omitted all the chocolate and added craisins and old fashioned oats (2 cps ea) for extra texture. I’ll try the chocolate next time. This is my favorite oatmeal cookie recipe
Ooh awesome!
Very good info. Lucky me I discovered your website by accident (stumbleupon).
I have bookmarked it for later!
Thank you!
I just made these and they are fantastic!! So easy to make! I didn’t add the extra chocolate bar I just used chocolate chips and they are so good, I can’t wait for family to enjoy them this special weekend!!
This story has been circulating as far back as the 1970s. It’s a total hoax. There was no real Neiman Marcus cookie. Great recipe, but bogus story.
I think you’re right!
Best delicious oatmeal cookies I’ve ever made. Thank u for the wonderful recipes.
You’re welcome!
Are the oats rolled oats or quick cooking oats??
regular oats!
I made these yumlicous cookies almost as the recipe states except I substituted a dark chocolate bar (from the dollar store!!) for the milk chocolate bar. Not too sweet which complemented the office pot luck fare perfectly.

Perfect use for the huge milk chocolate Easter bunny in my pantry! Will be making these tonight!
The recipe does not say how big to roll the cookie only how far apart to place them on the cookie sheet I made the cookies and forgot to put in the brown sugar but they were still good sweet enough with all that chocolate in them. I think I rolled them to big so I will make them again and roll them smaller and put in the brown sugar
Boy, these sound delicious!!! On my way to the grocery store for a bag of pecans and then baking these.
Thanks for the recipe.
According to snopes this is just the recebt version of this type of e-mail…It’s evolved a lot over the years and changed recipes and companies. Interestingly Neiman Marcus made up the cookie after(they didn’t sell cookies before) the rumor started going around and they give the recipe out for free.
Mmmmm those look good!
Thanks Larissa for saying Hi! I have received different versions of the recipe in emails over the years and one had expresso and one didn’t so I opted for the one that didn’t since I don’t drink coffee. I have a feeling that the true recipe probably has expresso in it though. Now I want to try it without the oats to see what it would taste like.
I’ve made them with both the oats and espresso. They are wonderful.
My mother has had the Neiman Marcus chocolate chip cookie recipe forever and is by far my favorite recipe. Other recipes we have tried have never been able to stand up to theirs. However, it is different than the one you have posted. It calls for expresso and not oats, even though we do not add the expresso when we make it. The oats do sound tempting to try! Thanks for all the awesome recipes you are always posting.
