CHOCOLATE OOEY GOOEY BUTTER COOKIES
Paula Deen says that if the word “butter” is in the title, you know it’s gonna be good! You gotta love Paula Deen. These cookies are melt in your mouth delicious.
The best part is that you can use lemon cake mix or whatever you have and I am sure they would be fabulous. I even have Red Velvet Gooey Butter Bars here.
Go to foodnetwork.com to see all the variations. I can’t wait to try Paula’s Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. Her Pumpkin Ooey Gooey Butter Cake is one of the most popular.
I may try it for Thanksgiving. The key to these babies is to not OVERCOOK them. The first batch I overcooked and I was not impressed.
The second batch I cooked 10 minutes and they were a completely different cookie. They were gooey but set up a little after they cooled.

Chocolate Ooey Gooey Butter Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- powdered sugar, for dusting
- 1 (15.25 ounce) box moist chocolate cake mix
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 egg
- 1 stick of butter, room temperature
Instructions
- In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Beat in the egg. Then beat in the vanilla extract. Beat in the cake mix. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours to firm up so that you can roll the batter into balls.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll the chilled batter into tablespoon sized balls and then roll them in powdered sugar. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart. Bake 12 minutes. The cookies will remain soft and gooey. Cool completely and sprinkle with more powdered sugar, if desired.
Where can I find a 18 oz cake box mix at ? I can only find 13.25 oz or 15.25 oz boxes.
Is there something I can add to the smaller boxes, to still be able to make these?
You’re right they’ve changed the sizes. I’ve tried it with the smaller and it works!
These cookies are always a big hit. They only thing I do differently is divide the dough into 4 packages of waxed paper and refrigerate between 2 hrs and overnight. It helps it stay firm longer.
I wonder if I can use low fat (Neufchatel) cream cheese?
Sure!
I am never done a review like this. I haven’t tasted the cookies yet but already I am not impressed. The instructions are incorrect. It has you preheating the oven, then before you bake the cookies you put them in the fridge to cool for two hours. I’m not going torun my oven for two hours without anything in it.
Secondly, this is the stickest cookie dough I have ever had the displeasure to work with. I am a believer that if I am this dissatisfied BEFORE I have even tasted the cookie, the receipe isn’t worth it. I don’t care how they taste, I won’t be making them again.
It says to preheat after you chill the dough….and if you don’t like how sticky the dough is don’t make them. They are great cookies. Have a nice day KAREN.
