EASY SALISBURY STEAK RECIPE
The first time I made this my husband immediately said, “We need to add this to the regular rotation.” So I guess that means he liked it. This homemade Salisbury steak recipe is everything compared to the TV dinners of the 80’s.
WHAT IS SALISBURY STEAK?
Salisbury steak is a dish made in the United States made from ground beef and is considered a version of a Hamburg steak. It is typically served with a brown gravy.
There’s nothing “steak” about this besides the shape of the hamburger patties.
HAMBURGER STEAK VS. SALISBURY STEAK
What is the difference? The main difference is the Salisbury steak mixture has egg, seasonings, onions, and sauces whereas a hamburger steak is just salt and pepper in the beef patties.
INGREDIENTS
- GROUND BEEF – I like to use a slightly lean ground beef here like 85%/15% for the meat mixture.
- PANKO BREAD CRUMBS
- KETCHUP
- DIJON MUSTARD – This gives the rich mushroom gravy flavor.
- WORCESTERSHIRE – I love the flavor that this adds.
- EGG
- GARLIC
- SALT
- BEEF BROTH – I really like the Better than Bouillon Beef broth or any low-sodium beef stock can be used.
- WHITE MUSHROOMS
- ONIONS – I love the flavor of onions but in the patties I like it to be really finely diced or grated. For the onion gravy, sliced onions are best.
HOW TO MAKE SALISBURY STEAK
INSTRUCTIONS
- Place the beef in a large bowl. Finely dice or grate 1/4 cup of the onion. Add the 1/4 cup onion to the ground meat. Slice the remaining onion and reserve for the gravy. Add the breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, mustard, salt, and worcestershire.
- Mix until combined and form into four oval patties about 3/4 inch thick.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Brown the meat patties on each side about 2 minutes. Remove cooked patties from the pan onto a plate.
- Add the onions and mushrooms and cook on medium-high for about 3-4 minutes or until onions are soft and mushrooms are golden brown. Add more olive oil if needed. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Lower the skillet to medium heat and melt the butter in the pan. Sprinkle the flour on top and cook for one minute. Slowly whisk in the beef broth. Add the ketchup, Dijon mustard, and worcestershire. Continue cooking for 4-5 minute or until mixture starts to thicken. Taste gravy and add salt and pepper as needed.
- Add the patties back into the pan with the onion gravy and heat for a few minutes until patties are cooked through. Serve over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice if desired. Store leftover Salisbury steak in an airtight container.
WHAT TO SERVE WITH THIS
You can serve this by itself, over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice. I like to serve with a green vegetable like asparagus, green beans, or broccoli.

Made the recipe exactly as written and it was delicious! My husband and I both love it. I think the onion inside the burger made all the difference. Wonderful!
Thank you!
This was amazing – I have had many versions of Salisbury steak over my lifetime. It’s not a complicated dish, but when you have great Salisbury steak it can mind blowingly good and satisfying in the way that a great meatball is. This recipe has the PERFECT amount of seasoning and the texture is melt in your mouth. I thought I lost it but it was saved on my phone. SO GOOD!
Yay thank you!
This recipe was CRAZY good. It’s a keeper enough that I just hand wrote it and put it into my recipe box just in case the internet disappears someday (and I’m lazy and I NEVER do that haha)
Thank you!!
Just made this, and wow, was it ever yummy! My guys loved it! I doubled it and didn’t change a thing in the recipe. I make a ton of your recipes and they are always very delicious. Thank you!
Thank you!!
I would cut down on the mustard, mine tasted too mustardy. Of course I over seared the outside of the patties and that didn’t
help.
Could I make it with cube steak?
No, you need to be able to mix in the onion and other seasonings into the meat. The cube steaks aren’t mix-in-able!
It would be hard to make into patties?
Made it tonight. Double batch because I told the guys at work and they were very interested. Tasted great and super simple. Was going to try a different one but it had dozens of ingredients. So glad I picked this one. Tasted great
Awesome!
Ok this is the best Salisbury steak recipe EVER. I’ve tried hundreds of recipes they all were very good but this one knocks it out of the park it’s phenomenal. I did add fresh thyme and a fresh bay leaf to the gravy because I had it on hand and needed to use it up . Thank you for sharing this recipe it was beyond delicious everyone needs this recipe in their life’s delicious
Aww thank you!
This is a keeper. Super easy and tasty!!! Followed recipe to a tee and wouldn’t change a thing!!!
Making this tonight this recipe looks so delicious can’t wait to try it I’m so excited
Very tasty. Only substituted one thing. I used oatmeal instead of bread crumbs as a binder. Recipe is similar to meatloaf in which I use oatmeal, and it brings a bit of “healthy” in an otherwise more comfortable main course. Hubby loved it so I’ll add it to our “so good let’s do this again soon” list. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing ..it’s delicious 😋 sorry you had to have people with no life comment ..it’s a sad sad world ..correct me @ i could care less, have a good day , God SPEED
haha thx
Really delicious recipe! I almost left the ketchup out because I thought it would make the recipe too sweet but I made the recipe as written and everyone loved it! It’s very simple, easy and quick as well. You hit this one outta the park – home run!! Thank you so much, Christy! 🙂

‘One pan’ doesn’t need to be hyphenated here. You use a hyphen when you’re using the terms together in their adjectival form, such as “a one-pan recipe”. Here in your title, however, you are simply using ‘pan’ as the object of the preposition, and you are describing the pan as only one; therefore, no hyphen needed. In fact, it’s just wrong to put one. If you want to be a blogger, you should at least know basic English grammar.
Was that necessary? I mean, I can be a grammar nazi too, but in this space, that was just sh*tty. Have fun being a miserable butthurt jerk.
You must be a lonely, miserable person. Does anyone on this planet care if someone misuses a hyphen. Hope my grammar is pleasing to you.
Sorry, I didn’t use a question mark. Hope it doesn’t ruin your day.
This is after all a cooking blog, where Christy shares delicious recipes. While your comment may have been a grammar refresher, there was no need for your smug, overly critical response.
HJ is a asshole.
Thanks for the lesson. I’ll take it.
I didn’t know Karen was spelled HJ
😂😂😂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Good one! Made me laugh out loud.
U are a miserable foolish curmudgeon. I wish nothing but the worst for you.
Wow, a thank you would have been in order! Or is my grammar something you want to correct also 🤔?
Looks great but would it work with ground turkey?
Yes!
